ему́ [им] ну́жно (+ инф.) — it is necessary for him [them] (+ to inf); he needs / has [they need / have] (+ to inf); he [they] must (+ inf)

о́чень (мне) ну́жно! ирон. разг. — that's the last thing I need! (ср. тж. надо I)

ну́жно бы (+ инф.; следует, рекомендуется) — it is advisable (+ to inf), one should (+ inf), one ought (+ to inf)

это нужно сделать — it must be, или has to be, done

нужно быть осторожным — one / you should be, или ought to be, careful

нужно было (бы) сесть в автобус (и вы не опоздали бы) — you should have taken a bus (and you would not have been late)

ему, им и т. д. нужно (+ инф.; соотв. указанным выше оттенкам значения) — it is necessary for him, for them, etc. (+ to inf.); he needs, they need, etc. (+ to inf.); he, they, etc., must (+ inf.); he has, they have, etc. (+ to inf.); he, they, etc., should (+ inf.), или ought (+ to inf.):

ей нужно поехать туда — it is necessary for her, или she needs, to go there

вам нужно поехать в санаторий ( вы в этом нуждаетесь) — you need to go to a sanatorium

(он сказал, что) мне нужно идти ( пора уходить) — (I said that) I must go

мне нужно было идти ( пора уходить) — I had to go

вам нужно (бы) посоветоваться с врачом, обратиться к врачу — you should consult, или ought to consult, a doctor

ему и т. д. не нужно (+ инф.; можно не) — he, etc., need not (+ inf.); ( не следует) he, etc., should not (+ inf.):

не нужно было говорить ему это, заставлять меня ждать и т. п. ( с упрёком 2-му лицу) — you should not have told him that, have kept me waiting, etc.

ему и т. д. нужно (рд., вн.) разг. = ему, им и т. д. нужен, нужна, нужно, нужны см. нужный

♢ очень (мне) нужно! ирон. разг. — just what I need! (ср. тж. надо I)
